Step 1. The Refinishing Process
Surfaces made of porcelain, ceramic tile, fiberglass, and even Formica can be beautifully refinished to look and feel like “new” again. This process has existed for many years and improvements in technology keep making it better and better.
Affordable Handyman over the past 18 years, has developed a unique technology of refinishing based upon certain products and procedures.
Bonding Process
Refinishing involves the application of very thin, yet incredibly durable coating to an existing surface. Bath tubs, sinks, ceramic tile, and even kitchen counter tops can be beautifully restored at savings up to 70% over replacements cost. A critical element of refinishing has always been getting the new coating to “stick” to the old surface, especially on porcelain and ceramic tile.
Affordable Handyman has built its business around a proprietary bonding process which eliminates the need to use the dangerous and corrosive acids typically used by other refinishers. We strongly believe that the use of chemical bonding process results in superior adhesion and a batter product with more longevity. In fact, it is through our successful experience with our bonding agent that we can confidently offer a 5-year warranty.
Generally the process of refinishing a porcelain bath tub involves the following:
Preparation of the work area
Affordable Handyman takes great care to insure that any surrounding areas are protected and that paint-type odors from the refinishing process are properly exhausted.
Preparation of the Surface
Affordable Handyman uses a twp-step cleaning process to adequately prepare the surface for refinishing. These are industrial strength cleaners designed to remove soap film, body oils, and hard water deposits.
Next, any chips or scratches are filled and repaired. Once the surface is again cleaned, a thin coat of Affordable Handymans proprietary bonding agent, Diamond Grip, is applied. This bonding agent forms a molecular bond which “welds together” the old surface and the new coating.
Application of New Surface
Technology seems to be changing everything these days and coatings are no different. Typically either an acrylic or urethane based coating will be applied with HVLP spray rig. These coatings, available in custom colors, will dry to the touch within minutes. Affordable Handyman has access to some of the most advanced, hi-tech coating available on the market today. These coatings produce such a hard, glossy surface that many people have a hard time distinguishing between a new and refinished surface. Through different techniques and procedures, a refinished tub can be ready to use within 4 to 24 hours.
Finishing Touches
One aspect of refinishing which tends to set Affordable Handyman apart is the attention given to finishing the job. Care is taken to polish the surface to remove dust particles or other imperfections in the finish. A polymer sealant is applied to the surface. The tub is re-caulked and the work area is thoroughly cleaned up.

Whether in the kitchen or bathroom, almost any counter top can be restored. Cabinets, too, can be refinished at the same time to complete a total remodeling plan.

Procedures

Step 3. Porcelain and Tile Refinishing

Refinishing allows a porcelain or tile fixture to be repaired or the color changed right where it is, without removal. This process is quick and almost always less expensive than replacement. Most people would have a hard time telling the difference between a new bathtub and a tub refinished by Affordable Handyman. With a restored smooth, glossy surface, a bathtub is much easier to keep clean. Another benefit of refinishing ceramic tile is that grout line are also sealed which significantly reduces the forming of mold and mildew. Procedures

Damaged, stained, or worn fiberglass fixtures can be restored to a “like-new” appearance. Fiberglass restoration involves repairing damaged areas and the application of a new, glossy finish.
Most fiberglass shower stalls and bathtubs will last only 10-15 years before they become worn and loose their shine making them difficult to maintain. Even worse, over time fiberglass bottoms can weaken and develop unsightly cracks. Refinishing allows any damage to be repaired and even a color to be changed to compliment a redecorating plan. And , refinishing is done without removing the fixture. This is a huge advantage for many one-piece fiberglass shower stalls which are actually “built-in” to the structural framing of the bathroom walls.

Step 5. Slip Resistant Surface(SRS)
A Slip Resistant Surface (SRS) involves the application of a special textured coating which results in a very durable, yet easy to clean surface. Slip Resistant Surfaces are predominantly used in bathtubs and showers, but can also be used on concrete and other smooth surfaces.
The application of a slip resistant surface can reduce the likelihood of slipping and injury. This is a great way for hotels to reduce the exposure of their guest to accidents as a result of slipping in bathtubs or showers. The same goes for apartment managers and individual home owners.
Affordable Handyman applies Slip Resistant Surfaces as separate installation or as part of a complete refinishing job. Since Slip Resistant Surfaces can be installed quickly so there is usually little “down time” for rental units. Slip Resistant Surfaces can be applied to almost any bathtub or shower regardless of the fixture’s age or condition.
